OCWORKBENCH Readers' Award
Best Desktop Chipset
In year 2006, we see a lot of mergers and acquisitions. Early in the year,
NVIDIA completes its acquisition of ULi and later in the year, we see the
marriage of AMD and ATi. Conroe also made a big impact in the market which
rob back a lot of users back to the Intel platform. How will all this change
the landscape in 2007 ?
Well, before we even predict what will
happen in 2007. We take a look at year 2006. For the best Desktop chipset,
our readers have spoken. The top 3 winners seems to be dominated for AMD
based solutions while Intel 965P took the top place.
Just in case you are not aware, AMD 580X
was formerly known as ATi RD580 chipset. Intel 965P is a super overclockable
chipset and it has shined among all the Intel and Intel Conroe supporting
chipsets. AMD 580X and NV 590SLI are competitors for the AM2 desktop
chipset. Both supports Dual 16x PCIe. One for CrossFire and the other for
SLI dual GPU capability.

Mainboard
As Intel made a big comeback in year 2006, the big brands like ASUS,
Gigabyte made quite a number of outstanding boards supporting the 965p
chipset. It is no doubt that most users who would want to try out the Conroe
E6300 considers it the best o/c boards. These 3 boards, matched with the
correct Intel CPU should reach 500MHz FSB easily. The first two boards are
also feature rich whereas the Bronze winner GA-965P-DS3 is a scaled down
version of the 965P-DQ6.
