Conclusion

The Nokia E65 being the slim down less QWERTY keyboard phone is very similar in features to the Nokia E61i we tested earlier. With its support of 3G and WIFI, this phone is definitely a office productivity tool for the busy professionals. Not only that, it comes with external microSD and USB + Bluetooth connectivity. That makes data transfer between devices much simpler. Most importantly is the high speed WIFI access. With it you can install PFINGO from Starhub and make VOIP calls at home or at any hotspot.

Compared to the E61i, this phone has a shorter battery life. If we were to browse the net through WIFI, it drains the battery very fast. You can actually sense the heat generated from the battery. That applies to making VOIP calls since it is using the WIFI radio. Similar to the E61i, the default setting for WIFI is set to energy saving mode. Thus, if you were to use it to search for Access points, you might not be able to detect some of the weaker ones. We tested it using PFingo and noticed that the voice quality is greatly improved if we disable energy saving mode in the settings. WIFI drains out the battery real fast. I would need to charge the battery each day. Always remember to disable WLAN Scanning if no you are not using the WIFI capability.

Overall, the phone is definitely something I have longed for. The ringtones are loud and it also takes pretty good pictures for a 2mpixel camera. Pictures taken at dim lighting might appear noisy. There is also no lag when browsing the various menu and options. The product is launched at a time where this region is going for HSDPA networks. Unfortunately, E65 doesn't come with a HSDPA support. If you are travel a lot and subscribe to voip services that relies on WIFI. E65 should be one of your choices as it looks more compact and has the strengths of the E61 less the qwerty keypad.
