Motorola DEXT

Motorola has resurfaced in the mobile scene in Singapore today with their launch of the Motorola DEXT in Singapore. It is the first Android phone from Motorola. This phone will be carried by Singtel exclusively.

The Motorola DEXT is a 3.1 inch QWERTY slider with touch screen capabilities. It comes with a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and connected to Facebook, Picasa, Photobucket or MySpace for easy uploading.

The phone also comes with a 3G and WIFI connection for speedy web browsing and downloading. It also has Bluetooth and GPS for your navigation needs. As it is a Google Andorid phone, it comes with a feast of google apps from Gmail, Maps, Talk etc. It comes pre-installed with a 2GB MicroSD card (supports up to 32GB MicroSD card).

Although based on the CupCake 1.5, the DEXT has it's own custom interface known as MOTOBLUR. MOTOBLUR basically ties in all your social media tools onto the main desktop. You get all the latest facebook status updates, tweets realtime. All the accounts added will also be Synchonised. In case you lose your phone, all informatoin is not lost as it can be retrieved from the MOTOBLUR secure server.

The phone is slightly smaller than the Samsung Omnia Pro B7610 but a bit heavier at 163g. I particularly like the keyboard as it is pretty good for SMS and texting. I tried the touch screen and find it be a bit laggy and sometimes not too responsive. Perhaps new revisions of the Android would correct all these. According to the speaker, upgrades to 2.0 or later will happen by mid of this year.

There is also no Divx playback support. For Chinese text input, you would need to download third party applications from the Android Market.

The Motorola DEXT will be available from this Saturday, 23 January 2010. Price will range from $0 to $348, depending on the price plans. You can also sign up for SingTel’s newly created value-added service, mSocial, priced at $5.35 per month, to enjoy unlimited local mobile data using the MOTOBLUR platform.
