Review Conclusion
of
Biostar TH55XE Clarkdale Mainboard
Conclusion
Biostar TH55XE is a board that raises eyebrows. Although it did not have the neatest feature set like CrossFire nor support for older socket heatsink, it runs real fast compared to the other boards we tested so far. In terms of specifications, it probably lacks the above mentioned CrossFire or LGA775 heatsink compatibility, tt compensates with power eSATA/USB, 1394 and a flexible BIOS with insane settings deep inside. Of course, it also lacks features like One Touch overclocking but it does have the V6, V8, V12 Turbo mode just like the EZ OC modes on ASRock. It also has a Smart Memory Integration test built in the BIOS and has a G.P.U (Green Power Utility) to indicate the real time power savings. Although the package is simple, the 58 pages manual is very concise and goes into details on also on configuring G.P.U feature of the board. This is somewhat missing on other manufacturer's as they emphasis on multilingual manual which is thick but didn't include many details. In terms of overclocking, we managed to push the Intel Core i5 661 to 4.46GHz(165x27) by bumping the CPU voltage by +0.1v. The rest of the voltages are default. In another test, the CPU runs at default and the iGPU can be pushed to 1.1GHz, from its default of 900MHz. Below are screen shots of the overclocking tool.
In conclusion, the Biostar TH55XE is a board worth considering. Although it doesn't have CrossFire support, it wouldn't really be that much of a loss as there is still a single full length PCIe 2.0 x16 slot for external graphics if you intend to do so. Price of this board ~ USD 104.
