Review Conclusion of Sony Ericsson W705

Conclusion

Walkmans phone is one of the earliest innovation of Sony Ericsson, bridging the traditional walkman mp3 into a mobile device that serves dual purpose. As the package comes with a 4GB M2 card preloaded with tons of songs. We were delighted to find classics that are available only on cassette tapes. While we enjoy the 80s Cantonese songs, we were happily surfing the net as Singtel bundled in free traffic and surfing at HSDPA speeds of 1.5mbps.

Although we like the idea of being able to download songs for free for a year. Whether the songs are free is questionable as the phone is tied up with data contract from the telco. That is to say, if you exceed a certain amount of data traffic and if you lost control, you will have to pay a hefty sum of money for the data charges. Of course, if you are smart enough, you can use pair up your device using WIFI and access these through the wireless network of your choice. We tested the same phone with a non Singtel card, the PlayNow plus won't work anymore. This some what locks you down with a single operator. Furthermore, if you want to retain those songs you earned, you have to download the PC client and pair up the PC client and your phone client with the same email id so that both accounts can be synchronised. Otherwise you are left with a weird ODF format which can't be played back on your Windows media player on PC.

The ear piece that comes with the package isn't that comfortable in my eyes. Fortunately, it can be detached and you can pair it up with your own ear piece. The bass seems to be lacking in the audio files downloaded from PlayNow Plus.

In conclusion, the W705 seems to be a very lightweight and elegant phone for everyone. As a phone, it has the features that you would need e.g. HSPA, camera, 3G etc. What is lacking is a better camera and earpiece. The PlayNow Plus service should also be operator independent. The phone would be perfect if has a larger screen for internet browsing and watching youtube.
