Review Conclusion of Aztech HW550 3G WiFi-N Mobile Broadband Router
Bluetooth 26 Aug 2009

Introduction

Conclusion

A couple of months ago, we reviewed our first 3G Broadband Router from Dovado. The Dovado UMR is not just a 3G Router but provides more like remote power management, SMS features etc. This all comes at a premium and this device is not readily available in this part of the world.

I am sure mobile broadband users are delighted that their dreams come true. It has been a long wait for a company to release such a product that is affordable priced at ~ 99 SGD, it is also one of the cheapest WiFi-N routers available. Whether you are using a ADSL/Cable broadband or a mobile broadband, this device has the support for it.

We tested the device with the Huawei E960 on M1 Broadband and found that the speed is maintained as 2Mbps. Applications that requires special ports to be opened also worked correctly. We tested both the ASUS netbook and Acer notebook. Both are able to connect to the WiFIN router without any issues.

The only disappointment is that the device only has a single USB port. As you are probably aware, some of the USB sticks can be quite flaky when underpowered. In the past, the E220 always drop the line due to not enough voltage. What could be done is to have another USB port and supply  a USB Y cable to take up 2 ports to power up the USB sticks.

In Conclusion, I think Aztech came in at the right time with a proper 3G USB broadband router that everyone has been eyeing for. If Aztech could spend a bit more time working on the firmware to provide SMS messaging services via the web admin or include bandwidth meter information, that would be fantastic. At such a good price, I would say it is a good buy if you require a WiFI N router that supports both traditional fixed line and wireless broadband.
