Review Conclusion of LG BL40 Chocolate phone
OCWorkbench 7 Dec 2009

Conclusion

The LG BL40 came as a surprise as we were told there weren't samples to go around. My first impression of the phone is that it is a fashion and a lady's phone due to it's red/black colour scheme. I was suspecting it should be just another S-class phone with the basics or a beautified interface. In fact, it was the the so called Dual UI that makes me check it out as this is something something unique which no one has done before.

The LG40 is not only slim and tall, but it did fit in my pocket nicely. The 3.5mm jack and power on/off button are on top and it only has a couple of button on the side of the phone.

For the past week, I bring it along as the work phone. Accessing the features needs some practice as it might be hidden under some menus. Although it is nice to work with the phone in landscape mode, the internal sensor sometimes couldn't detect and remain in portrait mode until I rotate it again 90 Deg to the vertical.

I like the idea of wide screen viewing. LG BL40 has got it right with black turning out black. I thought it was OLED initially but I was wrong. Kudos to LG for making such an excellent display especially playing back of DiVX titles. To enhance the experience, turn on the Dolby mobile to get a cinematic effect.

We tried to take some indoor photos with flash and finds that pictures tends to be bluish. Browsing the picture taken is another experience. With the multi touch function, you can now zoom in/out easily to different parts of the photo. It also works in web browsing, google maps too.

LG 40 also included preinstalled widgets and apps to enhance the experience. The SNS (Social networking services) lets you stay connected through twitter or facebook.

In conclusion, I love the way LG presents it's interface for manipulating the pictures and viewing of videos in wide screen format. The phone still need some tweaking though as it could be unresponsive sometimes. As you already know it is a feature phone, you would have to rely on LG to come out with updates of the applications or widgets. If this phone is powered by Windows mobile or Android. I think it would have a larger range of applications to choose.
