Introduction
Previously, without Purevideo HD, CPU utilisation is super high as most of the work is done by the processor. In the GeForce 7 series, we see a drop in CPU utilisation as we ran through titles like step into liquid on 7600GT for example. With the new Purevideo HD on the GeForce 8500/8600, the GPU off loads the CPU more by taking over some of the intensive processes. The comparison can be seen in the chart below. With the new GPU, we can see from the chart the CPU utilisation of HD contents under the various situations. We can see that the average CPU utilisation is only 21% as compared to the average 60-70% on the 7600GT. With this new architecture, we can now enjoy HD movies and yet offload the processor to do other things. We can get very low GPU utilisation during the decoding of HD contents even as low as $100.
