Conclusion

Compro VideoMate E500 promises what it claims. It's array of features definitely complments what users have been looking for. With the PCIe x1 interface, you don't get jitters in recordings. Watch live broadcasts, picture in picture is as simple as ABC.

Recording feature is excellent as you don't really need to be in standby mode. It can set it and forget it. Get your favourite programmes recorded while you are asleep and save electricity while the PC is not in use.

Tired of watching TV, swtich to the Radio function and you are flooded with information from your local broadcaster.

In terms of picture quality, the card scales well to resolutions of 1024x768 on the ASRock board using the onboard integrated video. Although the analog RF signal comes from the cable operator, it has little noise. The upscaled image are clear and acceptable. In fact, it is better than the USB Videomate U900 that we tested before.

Overall, it is a good TV card for the terrestial Analog broadcasts (supports PAL/NTSC/SECAM). It works with all broadcast systems in the world. The only disappointment is that it doesn't support DAB (audio) nor DVB-T (video). We would expect new products from Compro to support digital standards. It will definitely deliver better clarity.
