Conclusion

The Nokia E61i is the first QWERTY phone we reviewed here that comes with a QWERTY keypad. With its support of 3G and WIFI, this phone is definitely a office productivity tool for the busy professionals. Not only that, it comes with external microSD and USB + Bluetooth connectivity. That makes data transfer between devices much simpler. Most importantly is the high speed WIFI access. With it you can install PFINGO from Starhub and make VOIP calls at home or at any hotspot.

We like the large screen it came with. It is also easy to navigate while browsing. Being an open platform, you can choose to install your favourite Opera browser as you wish. The regret would be the cloesness of the numeric pad. After testing the i600, I feel that E61i should spread out the numeric pad instead of squeezing them at the centre of the phone. One way is to move them to the right hand side of the phone sharing keys with "UIO,JKL,M;." The numbers should also mirror that of the computer keyboard as we are all used to number 9 being on the top right hand corner and not on the bottom right corner of the keyboard.

Talking about WIFI, the default setting is set to energy saving mode. Thus, if you were to use it to search for Access points, you might not be able to detect some of them weaker ones. This actually affected the quality of the Pfingo service. If you need better quality, do disable energy saving mode and you should be well connected for your VOIP calls. Do take note that enabling WIFI drains out the battery real fast. I would need to charge the battery each day. Always remember to disable WLAN Scanning if no you are not using the WIFI capability.

Overall, the phone is definitely something I have longed for. The ringtones are loud and it also takes good pictures for a 2mpixel camera. There is also no lag when browsing the various menu and options. The product comes when a time when HSDPA networks are ready for prime time. If you are planning to use HSDPA, you probably have to wait for newer models. If you are the person who uses WIFI a lot and access points are vast, E61i should be one of the better phones to consider despite its dimensions
