Introduction ECS 945GTY-M is not the usual boards we review on OCWORKBENCH. In fact, this is the first time we are taking a look at a socket 479 board. You are probably aware that this is a mobile on desktop mainboard which seats the S479 Yonah and Merom processor. Why Yonah or Merom (Core 2 Duo), this is because these cpus uses less power and produces less heat than conventional desktop CPUs. They were originally meant for notebooks. Due to more demand for noiseless and low power desktops, MoDT boards are becoming a trend. Furthermore it is Intel VIIV compliant. It is thus a good choice for building a noiseless HTPC.
This board uses the Intel 945GT north bridge pairing with ICH7-M DH chipset. It comes with GMA 950 integrated graphics and supports FSB667/533MHz processor with Hyperthreading. In terms of memory support, there are two DIMMs and up to 4GB of memory (DDR2-400/533/667) can be used on this board. There is also two SATAII and 1 IDE channel on board. There is also a ALC883 8 ch audio and Intel® 82573L Gigabit LAN Controller, 4 USB ports, VGA out. The PCIe x16 can be paired up with a higher quality VGA card for better graphics.
