Usage S700i uses a 180 deg swivel base design which is a bit different from what you have seen on Motorola v80. Although SonyEricsson is promoting this as "Swing", it doesn't swing that easily when opening up the phone. Usually I will use a thumb to rotate it 90 deg to the vertical and use another hand to swivel to 180 Deg. You can swivel it from the left or right. When the phone is closed, the screen interface is not in the same orientation as the keypad. In my test, I have to hold the phone the other way round, e.g. the buttons/power connector facing away from you. It might be better if SonyEricsson to adopt what the V80 does. The screens re-orientates itself at 0, 90 and 180 Deg respectively. The power on button is located at the bottom of the keypad after you swivel open the phone. When you first install the SIM and power up the phone, it goes through a wizard and helps your configure the date/time and whether you want to copy the contacts to the phone. Multimedia The built in 1.3 mpixel CCD camera can take shots in Normal, Burst 4, with Frame at various resolutions 1280x960, 640x480, 320x240, 160x120. There is a Night Mode and Effects allows you to take pictures with add on effects like Black & White, Negative, Sephia, Solarise. There are various interesting frames which you could use to add fun to your photos. There is also a White LED option for taking photos in dark environment and a timer is also available. Other functions include White Balance Spot Photometry which helps to take photos with better focus. Up to 8X digital zoom can be set. The only disappointment is that the camera function will only work when the phone is closed. See page 4 for photos taken using camera. For video Recording, you can choose between Large 176x144 or Small 128x96.There is the same night and effect mode like the camera. Video can be taken as unlimited or limited (for small clips). Connectivity This phone has 32MB of internal memory for you to keep all your videos, pictures, midi, mp3 ringtones. The S700i offers external storage. S700i uses the Memory Stick Duo. You can store the ringtones, images, videos etc on the 32M Stick or the memory on the phone. Transferring of images, ringtones and Java apps are easy as you can choose to use the infra red, bluetooth, GPRS or insert the Memory Stick into a Card reader on a PC and transfer the necessary files into it. If you use Bluetooth or Infrared, the relevant file types will also be automatically dumped into the correct directories which you could access them via the file manager. Ringtones S700i comes with a loud speaker located at the back of the phone near the camera lens. This speaker is responsible for playback of ringtones, games, conversations in speakerphone mode. In fact, I was very surprised that the MP3 ringtones are very loud when set to MAXIMUM level of 8. I would advise you to set to 6/8. This is in contrast to the T610 which you could hardly hear the MIDI ringtones. S700i incorporates vibration alert which you can used it together with the ringtones. The vibration alert is a bit weak compared to Siemens S65 or the Nokia 6600. |
