SonyEricsson P800 - What's Hot & What's Not ...
ngws 30th Dec 2002

Internet Browser

Opera or Not

A lot has been said about the new 'Small Screen Rendering' technology from the latest Opera internet browser and how well it ran on a device like the SE P800. Contrary to popular belief, the P800 DOESN'T come pre-installed with it. Instead, the P800 has it's own browser which is pretty capable by itself. HTML (up to 3.2 supported), WML (for WAP), xHTML (WAP 2.0) and much-said iMODE (cHTML) are supported. *Note: Frames and Java script are however NOT supported*

Bookmarks/Offline Viewing

Much like a regular internet browser, you can bookmark your favorite websites and also the option to categorize them in different folders. You can save a page and load it offline for reference too.

Hyperlink/Saving pictures

Using your stylus as a mouse, you can navigate through hyperlinks on a web page. You can also save a picture or link simply by pressing on it. Again, this is like your regular surfing on your desktop.

SMS/EMS/MMS

No T9

The SE P800 doesn't come with T9. Instead, it uses the old and proven method of 'alternate letter entry' method  found on most phones (when you turn off your dictionary). *This is only apparent when the keypad is closed* You can also select your favorite ringtone for your alerts as well.

Handwriting Recognition

With the keypad opened or removed, you have two choice of data entry. The first of which is profile here is handwriting recognition. This works much like those found on Palm (Graffiti) or Pocket PC (Transcriber etc). The difference is the SE P800's version works like a charm! No kidding! The recognition system is very fast, forgiving enough for my 'style' to be recognized and took a little less than an hour to master. I have used Palm devices (IIIc, Vx, M100, M125) to the latest Pocket PCs (iPAQ and Loox) and have NEVER really used this method of data entry till now!

Writing in line with the triangle will give u an alphabet in upper case. For lowercase alphabet, write below the triangle and lastly for numerical entries .. it's above the triangle.

QWERTY Keyboard

The standard QWERTY keyboard is available for input should you decide to forgo the handwriting thingy. The keyboard is nicely crafted with the necessary keys and signs available for immediate use. Thanks to the responsive screen, using the keyboard or writing is truly a joy. Kudo SE!

All's nice and rosy but I would prefer to see some sort of 'auto-complete' feature that we see on the Pocket PCs .... it would be easier and faster to input words that way.

MMS

The P800 MMS engine is very feature-packed. You can start by adding a picture or a quick scribble (read: handwritten love note :) Text, audio files etc are also supported. There is also the option to edit your object afterward by cropping, resizing or rotating your object. An interesting feature is that you can set the time for the object to appear and how long it should stay visible ... kudo SE!

Screen Saver/Ringtones

Full and 1/2

Animated GIF files can be used for display as a screen saver. This can be displayed in full screen size of 208x320. However, if you have your keypad up and closed, only the top 208x144 of the screen saver is displayed. Other than that, the SE P800 can accepts any supported picture formats (jpg, bmp etc) to be displayed as a screen saver ... do note that ONLY animated GIF is supported for a 'moving experience'.

Myriad of sounds!

No state-of-the-art mobile phone can do without it. Beautiful sounding ringtone rendered flawlessly .... It all started with Samsung with their 16 polyphonic .mmf format. Then the Nokia 7650 went a step further with support for amr, wav, midi ringtone on 24 polyphonic. What has the SE P800 got up its sleeve? Well for starter, the P800 supports amr, au, midi, rmf (BeatnikTM) and wav ... no MP3 YET, I am afraid.
