ECS A980 Desknote (3)
Conclusion The Desknote A980 as its name implies replaces the desktop PC. With a nice LCD screen and a all in one solution, ECS A980 is made to be stable and not a super fast machine due to possible heat issues. In our usage, we find the system quite hot under intense benchmarking. That could throttle the system performance downwards once it is too hot. The general performance of the system is quite good but the BIOS really need some improvements for speed. In terms of features, the A980 we have comes with a LCD panel and I like it a lot. It helps to conserve desktop space and I can work on it so long i can find a AC plug. The only trouble is that if you are on the road, you can't use it as there is no battery pack for it. As for features, it comes with 6 ch audio, LAN, 1394, USB 2.0, DVD drive. Overclocking is what most people will tend to play with on this small footprint desktop replacement. IN the BIOS, there are FSB adjustments which allow you to increase from 100 to 115 or 133 to 145Mhz fsb. Ram timings can be set to SPD, CAS 2.5 or CAS 3. We used a CAS 2 stick in our test and set it to 100/166. The A980 is easy to setup and easy to use. Anyone can easily set it up without a problem. Overall, it is an innovative idea to use conventional CPUs packed into such a little "box" with all the necessary connectivity tools built onboard. If you do not need so much mobility and you are tight on budget, the Desknote A980 is worth considering since it uses the conventional CPUs which you can easily upgrade on your own since it uses standard parts than the notebook makers that uses proprietary components.
