ASUS P4SDX SiS 655 Dual Channel DDR Mainboard Review (7)

Conclusion

There is definitely a reason why ASUS skipped A0 stepping of SiS 655 chipset and go for B0. ASUS P4SDX is again one of the most feature pack boards. Based on the SiS 655 B0 stepping chipset, we see that the performance has improved in the 3D performance category making it lead over the A0 boards and the E7205 (Granite Bay board). It has almost everything that you can think of - Gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0, RAID (SATA and IDE), IEEE 1394, 6 channel audio, Dual Channel DDR400, Hyper threading support (P4 3.06), S/PDIF, AGP 8x, CrashFree BIOS 2 etc

Installation is straightforward. I particularly like the idea of horizontally mounted floppy connector and the single IDE RAID channel (supported by Promise). The chipset's heatsink is warm on operation. Perhaps it should have been placed further away from the CPU socket. Perhaps a fan should be mounted on the chipset. Something nice on ASUS P4 boards is that you can use older generation non-P4 PSU because it supports the ASUS EZplug connector.

Overclocking wise, this board has 1Mhz stepping but the range is only from 100~166 at 1mhz intervals which are not working right now at the various settings. Whatever I set, the FSB is still 133Mhz (1005.001 BIOS problem). There is no PCI/AGP setting. Documentation is well written and it clearly indicates the RAM that can be used and how dual channel ddr can be configured. Something commendable is the default of 133.55Mhz as the default fsb. If you choose TURBO, it will be 135.xxMhz. All tests were done using non-turbo mode so that comparison is fairer.

* We will update the review with overclocking results once we get a new BIOS that allows us to address the clkgen.
