Benchmarking

Our test environment :

  • Intel Celeron 1.2G
  • FIC FS35T
  • 256M SDRAM
  • Seagate Barracuda IV 20G IDE ST31200A in FAT32
  • Seagate Barracuda V 120G SATA ST320029AS in FAT32

We will be running 4 popular HD benchmarking programs on the two drives.

  • ATTO Disk Benchmark
  • HD-Tach 2.61
  • Sisoft Sandra 2003 File System Benchmark
  • ZDnet Winbench99

Sisoft Sandra 2003

From the two charts, we see that the difference in the benchmark results differ by around 1000KB/s. This is esp the case when it is used in buffered wriet. In Fig 2, we see that the SATA drive (which is in FAT32) is not as fast as a IDE drive using NTFS.
