Overclocker 28 Nov 2002

Barracuda ATA V Features

The Barracuda ATA V series also has lower capacity drives but they are not SATA drives. The 80G and 120G series specifications are right below:

Some of the highlights are

  • 60G/platter
  • 100% FDB motors for incredible acoustics - very quiet indeed
  • 8MB cache on SATA models
  • 350Gs non-op shock

Current PSU does not provide the power connector for the SATA HD. You would need this converter to connect up the HD power plug to your current PSU.

Benchmarks I

At the test labs in Seagate, we were shown the performance of the 4 drives. All 4 HD are assigned as IDE 0,1,2,3. IDE 0 and 1 are independent, IDE 2 and 3 are running in RAID 0 mode (using Windows 2000 software raid).

The test is done using a software ATTO with a chosen file blk of 32Mb. The graph on the left shows independent HD performance, the chart on the right is the performance in RAID 0 mode.

In another separate test, IDE 1 which is a data drive, we first play a MPG file. Next, we hot plug the HD and try to access the file. Windows shows that the HD is removed. We plugged in the HD again and everything is back to normal.
