Nexland Pro100 Internet Security Box (5)
Overclocker 8 Aug 2002

Conclusion

Nexland Pro 100 Internet Security box is a pretty interesting product as it offers a more detail level of control over security. It could be said as a one box solution for companies or even SOHOs who wanted to share their DSL connection and needs 24x7 online.

In fact, I was quite impressed by the fact that this box supports updating of Dynamic DNS. With the option to run Special applications  behind the firewall, this would definitely be a plus point to own this box if your ISP allows you to host your own web services, mail services behind the box thru dynamic DNS mapping. You would save costs and definitely could do modifications locally than remotely. If you have a PPTP server running behind the firewall, this box will also be able to allow PPTP packets to tunnel through. Employees whom are roaming can still tunnel through and be able to access the corporate network as if they're in office.

The fact that I use ICQ for chatting lets me chat online again as the Efficient Speedstream in Router mode doesn't work very well. In pro100, the simplest way is to configure the client machine to map to the DMZ port (IP).

If you are those who are crazy over network traffic, up time etc, this box also allows you to set SNMP traps. You can also monitor it remotely provided the permissions are set correctly to view the SNMP information of the Pro 100.

The only disappointment is the 110v power adaptor and there isn't a integrated ADSL modem built in. As there is only one output port, you still need to hook it up to your hub or switch. Overall, it is an excellent network product aim at the mid range users and I would recommend it. Priced at USD 169 (pricewatch.com)
