Gigabyte 8SG667 SiS 648 Mainboard Review
(1)
With the advancement in technology, we consumers get to buy cheaper and better products. If you noticed, big names like D*ll are selling at 500 dollars (SGD 999) for a Pentium 1.8A system. With the downturn economy, many users who self assemble computers tend to choose for the cheaper and quality mainboard and peripherals. This resulted in competition among chipset makers and also mainboard manufacturers to cut cost to bring down the cost of ownership to its lowest. Gigabyte 8SG667 is one of such attempts by Gigabyte by reducing the "high end" features and give you a board which is not so expensive but serves the purpose well. GA-8SG667 is based on the SiS 648 chipset which supports Async DDR333 and unofficial DDR400. The board comes with a basic feature set but has most of the functions a normal user would need. A 6 channel audio on board, 3 DIMM DDR slots, ATA133 IDE, 6 USB ports (2 onboard + 4 using wire) etc. For the overclockers, you might be delighted to know that the board supports adjustable 100 ~ 355Mhz (1MHz-linear) via BIOS, Multiplier adjustable via BIOS (retail Intel CPUs are multiplier locked) and AGP/ DRAM Clock are adjustable via BIOS. There is also an option to FIX the AGP/PCI at 66/33. You can choose to run at various Async mode (e.g. in different ratios, see gallery 4 for more information).
