AUTO SHUTDOWN GUIDE

Updated 05/11/02 by Tim B @ OCWorkbench.com

This guide is for boards which don’t have the automatic shutdown feature built into them - i.e. my K7S5A, as the bios only has control over the post sequence it would be good if windows could shutdown the system when it gets to hot or too much voltage,

This guide makes use of the original shutdown exe available from within windows xp or an alternative can be downloaded here http://www.budja.com/shutdown

As you may know the K7S5A doesn't have the temperature shutdown feature on board however the same effect can be achieved through software, WindowsXP has its own utility built in called shutdown which can remotely shutdown or restart other computers on the same network,

To get your computer to shutdown on high temp for example just do the following: -

Either use the built in shutdown.exe or download the one above (which may work with other windows o/s' although I tested it on win98se and it didn't)

Configure Motherboard Monitor 5
to execute the program on the alarm like so...

Step1
Select the temperatures tab on the left hand side, then tick the alarm box and the execute prog box

Step2

Select the windowsxp shutdown exe in the windows/system32/ directory or the downloaded exe from above

Step3

Insert the correct command line options - I used -s -t 05 which is shutdown in 5secs.

Tha available are (using windows xp util - the download has similar options)...

Usage: shutdown [-i | -l | -s | -r | -a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "c
omment"] [-d up:xx:yy]

No args Display this message (same as -?)
-i Display GUI interface, must be the first option
-l Log off (cannot be used with -m option)
-s Shutdown the computer
-r Shutdown and restart the computer
-a Abort a system shutdown
-m \\computername Remote computer to shutdown/restart/abort
-t xx Set timeout for shutdown to xx seconds
-c "comment" Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters)
-f Forces running applications to close without warning
-d [u][p]:xx:yy The reason code for the shutdown
u is the user code
p is a planned shutdown code
xx is the major reason code (positive integer less than 256)
yy is the minor reason code (positive integer less than 65536)

Step4

Configure the correct temps for the alarms,

Apply the settings and you're finished! The above method can also be used for voltage alarms and fan speed alarms using the same principal, If anyone has this working on Win2k/NT let me know!

Note: I actually use MBprobe to shutdown the system on critical temps and has worked once for me when the power plug once fell out on my nice Volcano7+...

MBProbe can be seen here..

For Win9x/ME/2k : "RUNDLL32.EXE user,exitwindows"

You can also create a shortcut and put this command line on it.

*Don't use the "" on the command line

best regards
